Eastern Sierra Nevada
The Eastern Sierra, east of the Sierra Nevada mountains, includes all of Inyo and Mono counties and parts of neighboring counties. Highway 395 runs through this sparsely populated region, connecting towns like Bridgeport, Lee Vining, Mammoth Lakes, Bishop, and Lone Pine. The area covers large sections of the Inyo and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forests and portions of Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Death Valley National Parks. I've spent countless days traveling along Highway 395, and the work featured here is the result of these journeys.
“…the mighty Sierra, miles in height, and so gloriously colored and so radiant, it seemed not clothed with light but wholly composed of it, like the wall of some celestial city.... Then it seemed to me that the Sierra should be called, not the Nevada or Snowy Range, but the Range of Light.”
— John Muir, The Yosemite (1912)
